In a devastating incident on February 2, 2025, a 32-year-old mother tragically lost her life while walking with her daughter on the seafront in Lowestoft, Suffolk. Saffron Cole-Nottage’s walk quickly turned into a heartbreaking event as she slipped on a narrow path and became trapped between sea defense rocks.
Slip Leads to Fatal Trapping
The inquest revealed that while enjoying a day out, Saffron slipped not once, but twice. According to senior inquest officer Paul Sermons, her first slip occurred on the path, but she was able to recover. Unfortunately, during her second slip, she landed with her head stuck between the sea defense boulders.
“While walking, Saffron lost her footing and slipped, landing on the pathway,” Sermons recounted during the proceedings, shedding light on the tragic circumstances leading to Saffron’s untimely demise.
Desperate Efforts to Save Saffron
At the scene, Saffron’s daughter, along with various members of the public, made desperate attempts to rescue her from the rocks. Emergency services responded quickly, but despite their efforts, the mother of three could not be saved and was declared deceased at the location.
Even after they freed her from the rocks, it was too late. “Although they managed to free Saffron from the rocks, she tragically died,” Sermons stated, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
Inquest and Investigation
Following the incident, a coroner has agreed to launch a full inquest to determine the exact cause of death, with a pre-inquest review hearing scheduled for June 6. Initially, the death was treated as unexplained, with Suffolk Police reporting that there were no suspicious circumstances involved.
